🎙️EP04 - New Nature Based Ventures Accelerator

A conversation with Cameron Price on the role of nature-tech, accelerators and the impacts of politcal change on the environment

🎙️EP04 - New Nature Based Ventures Accelerator

Welcome to the 4th episode! 🎙️

Introduction

It's time for EP04, with Cameron Price of EcoLaunch. A bit of a departure from my home patch of energy and industrial; we are into nature-tech and biodiversity this time out.

We discuss Cameron's journey from Australia to Albania, where he is now focused on enabling nature-based solutions through his new accelerator programme and enterprise, EcoLaunch.

In particular the few minutes Cameron discuss his personal story and inspirational moment with Arne Naess are very cool - you can tell the passion and inspiration to deliver positive environmental change is embedded deep within him.

Short Clips from my conversation with Cameron Price on the state of biodiversity, nature and his new accelerator programme

It's relatively early stages in the EcoLaunch, with the first few cohorts progressing through - interesting challenges!

I'm kind of building the plane in flight

He shares insights on the importance of community engagement, the unique approach of EcoLaunch, and the challenges faced by nature-based startups in securing funding and navigating the complex landscape of environmental policy.

Even with billions flooding into biodiversity loss prevention and habitat restoration, it's not easy for startups in the sector:

It's harder to get $1m than $20m!

We recorded this a few months back - at the time the authoritarian trajectory of US politics was becoming evident - we had some discussions about the impact and the need for a shift in narrative towards hope and collaboration, as well as the role of AI and technology innovation in supporting ecological restoration efforts.

On the wider multilaterial COP process:

It's difficult to have faith in these multilateral processes when constrained by that consensus process when there's bad actors deliberately sabotaging that, and so it's necessary but insufficient...

And the scale of our collective challenge:

There's all these commitments, yet we still see year on year, an increase, not a decrease, an increase in the rate of greenhouse gas emissions. The only exception was during COVID, when there was a 7 % drop. But we need to actually reduced by that much each and every year from then through to 2030 to have any hope of keeping global average temperatures below 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels.

Wrapping up, Cameron concludes with a positive outlook on the future of environmental stewardship and the opportunities for individuals to contribute to this vital work in a disruptive post-AI world:

🎙️
"There's a need and there's an opportunity and there will be resources that will flow to this niche. The main problem is the capacity to deliver because as billions are directed into Nature restoration, we need an industry, need people, restoration ecologists, product designers, marketing, whatever your domain of expertise is contributing to this collective effort."
